Shooting near Clairton schools prompts lockdown

CLAIRTON, Pa. — The Clairton School District was placed on lockdown Friday morning after a shooting in an alley near the school buildings.

According to police, a man was shot in the back at about 7 a.m. in Chestnut Alley. The victim, who ran to a nearby Dollar General, called 911 and was flown to a hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

The Clairton School District is located about a block away from the shooting scene and was in lockdown for about 20 minutes.

Parents who arrived with their children during that time were turned away.

"A teacher came up and told us the school was on lockdown, and to go ahead and take her back home,” Charles Green said.

No arrests have been made.

According to a statement on the district's website, dismissal was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday and would take place as previously planned.
