Aliquippa Upset In WPIAL Playoffs

The Defending W.P.I.A.L. Class AA Champions are out of the playoffs after losing to Bishop Canevin Thursday night.

Brian Billigen scored 34 points and Steve Mackin added 20 points to lead Bishop Canevin to the 71-60 upset.

Aliquippa was the 3rd seed in the Class AA playoffs, but struggled heading into the postseason, losing four of its seven previous games.

Pitt football recruit Jonathan Baldwin led the Quips with 24 points.

Bishop Canevin never trailed, but the game was close until the end when the Crusaders made 11 of 14 free throws to end the game.

Bishop Canevin has now won its last five games and will play Monessen in the W.P.I.A.L. Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Aliquippa ends its season 16-10.
