LATROBE, Pa. —
The players had to check in by 4 p.m. Most showed up in Latrobe wearing comfortable shorts and T-shirts. Some carried flat screen televisions into the dorm rooms. Others brought microwaves and snacks. Pillows seemed to be a must.
SLIDESHOW: Steelers Arrive At Training Camp, Bringing Flat Screen TVs, Microwaves
Channel 11 didn't see quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. He reportedly snuck in a side door. Roethlisberger was recently served with a civil lawsuit when he returned to Lake Tahoe, where a 31-year-old Nevada woman alleges the quarterback raped her in a hotel penthouse in July 2008. Roethlisberger was in Nevada on both occasions to compete in a celebrity golf event.
"I have no question about Ben's mindset," said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.
"When we step on the field, this is kind of our safe haven to get away from things. I know Ben. He's looking forward to coming out here and competing, said Steelers teammate and wide receiver Hines Ward.
Day one of 2009 training camp began for the media with two press conferences.
The first featured top draft pick Ziggy Hood. The defensive lineman out of Missouri came to terms on a five year deal with the Steelers. "I'm glad to be here," Hood said. "I ready to go to work." Hood will lean on and learn from all of the teams veterans but especially fellow defensive lineman Aaron Smith. "My locker is right next to his," the defensive lineman said. "So any little teaching technique that he taught me, I took a lot of it and I have to listen to him because he has been in the league so long."
The second press conference featured Heath Miller who just came to terms on a six year deal with the Steelers. Miller who is a two time Super Bowl champion called the Steelers "the best organization in all of sports."
Rumors swirled Friday on social networking sites, including Twitter and Facebook, that the Steelers were considering adding quarterback Michael Vick to the roster. The Steelers front office would not comment on the rumors. Players said their current quarterbacks are pretty talented.
"We're not hurting for quarterbacks," said Steelers kicker Jeff Reed.
