Dan Rooney's Fortune Revealed; Released Financial History For Ambassador Post

Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney's new job as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland is giving everyone new perspective on his family's fortune and role in politics.

Rooney was sworn in as ambassador last week, but to get the government job, which pays about $150,000 per year, he had to reveal his financial history.

The Washington Post was able to obtain a copy of the report.

The report shows Rooney took in a salary of $2.2 million from the Steelers over the past year and a half.

He'll get a severance package from the team over the next three years worth a total of a penny less than $1 million.

But those aren't the only sources of income for Rooney. He also brought in $1.2 million from the family track and casino business: Rooney Enterprises and another $900,000 from the family's track in Florida.

A decent chunk of that money went to political campaigns.

According to a report released by the Center for Responsive Politics, Rooney and his wife donated $150,000 to federal candidates since 1990. About 90 percent of that went to Democrats, including $500 to President Barack Obama.

Of course, if the ambassadorship doesn't work out, Rooney has plenty to fall back on. He's still the majority owner of the Steelers franchise, which is believed to be worth about $1 billion.
