Girls AA - Seton-La Salle 73, Bishop Canevin 60

The Seton-La Salle girls basketball team won its second consecutive WPIAL Class AA championship with a 73-60 victory over Bishop Canevin Friday afternoon.

The top-seeded Rebels (25-0) trailed from the midpoint of the first quarter on, but had to fight off a furious rally from No. 2 seed Bishop Canevin (21-5), which trailed by seven with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter before Seton-La Salle scored five quick points to restore its lead.

Boys A - Lincoln Park 74, Cornell 57

For the third consecutive year, Lincoln Park played for the WPIAL A Championship Friday night. This year the outcome was different from the previous two, and the Leopards defeated Cornell (19-6) 74-57.

"Three years," said senior center Devontae Watson, who scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, "but we finally got it."

It's the first championship for the five-year-old program -- and one that evokes strong emotions for Midland, the small Beaver County community that Lincoln Park (22-4) calls home. Long-closed Midland High School won eight WPIAL titles from 1965-79.

Girls AAAA -  Mt. Lebanon 58, Oakland Catholic 49

The Mt. Lebanon girls basketball team survived a furious rally from top-seeded Oakland Catholic, 58-49, to claim its third WPIAL Class AAAA title in the past four years Friday.

Mt. Lebanon (23-3) led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but Oakland Catholic (24-2) battled back to tie it on a 3-pointer with just over five minutes remaining.

Boys AAA - New Castle 57, Hampton 44

The New Castle boys basketball team remained undefeated Friday night when they defeated Hapmton 57-44 in the WPIAL AAA Championship Game.

The Red Hurricanes (26-0) are the first boys basketball team to finish the WPIAL season undefeated since Blackhawk did so in 2000.

Saturday Schedule and Results:

Girls A - Vincentian 54, North Catholic 50

Vincentian's Laura Primyon hit four 3-pointers, and the Royals erased a 10-point deficit in a whirlwind fourth quarter to down rival North Catholic, 54-50, in the WPIAL Class A girls basketball title game Saturday afternoon.

It is the sixth championship for Vincentian (25-1). North Catholic (20-6) was trying to extend its record to 17 WPIAL titles.

Boys AA - Beaver Falls 46, Monessen 27

Sheldon Jeter shrugged off early foul trouble to score 19 points and spark a crucial third-quarter run that carried Beaver Falls to a 46-27 victory over Monessen in the WPIAL Class AA boys basketball championship game.  

Jeter, held without a field goal until the second half, scored eight points during a 14-0 Beaver Falls run that helped the Tigers pull away from a 20-20 tie.   Second-seeded Beaver Falls (24-2) held top-seeded Monessen (23-3) to just nine second-half points.

Girls AAA - Hopewell 50, South Park 34

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough put up a game-high 35 points -- and outscored the opposing team -- in leading Hopewell's 50-34 victory over South Park in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game.

Hopewell (24-2) led by just a point entering the fourth quarter, but closed the game on a 17-2 run. Ashley Mikelonis scored 15 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead South Park (22-3).

Boys AAAA - Gateway 49, Central Catholic 39

The Gateway Gators defeated Central Catholic, 49-39, Saturday night at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center to become the first Quad-A team to win back-to-back titles since New Castle won three consecutive titles from 1997-99.

The Gators (20-6) used a 7-0 run to start the second quarter and stretched a 12-11 first-quarter lead to a 28-14 halftime edge. Central continued launching 3-pointers but missed all six attempts from beyond the arc in the second quarter. The Vikings shot 15 of 46 from the field, including three of 21 from 3-point range, and made only six of 14 free throws.
