Gateway School Board to vote on fate of football coach's job

Teacher furloughs, position cuts also expected

PITTSBURGH —

Gateway head football coach Terry Smith has been one of the most successful W.P.I.A.L. coaches over the last decade, but on Wednesday, he could be without a job.

The Gateway School Board is trying to cut the budget, and Smith is part of the plan.

"Ten straight years I've been on the sidelines," Smith, who is also the school's athletic director, told Channel 11's Rich Walsh.

The board's plan is to cut the job from full time to part time, and under the new resolution, Smith would not be allowed to coach any sport, including football for the Gators.

Smith told Walsh that he's hopeful the board will change its mind and keep him on as head coach.

"I'm hopeful. There's a big meeting tomorrow night that our school board is going to make some decisions," Smith explained to Walsh at Channel 11's Skylights Media Day at Heinz Field. "A change at this point would be devastating. I just hope our school board will make a good decision and keep me on the sidelines."

Smith has been getting a ton of support, including a rally Monday night at The Garden City United Methodist Church in Monroeville.

"My family feels very loved from the support," Smith said at that event.

The board's plan also includes 23 teacher furloughs and cutting six special education positions.

The Gateway School Board meets Wednesday 7 p.m.
