Fedko: North Catholic Basketball Goes Long Way To Win

PITTSBURGH —

Written by: John Fedko

One of the great stories of the WPIAL high school basketball season is happening over at North Catholic. The Trojans have one of the best basketball teams in the area, and when you see the box scores, the same name keeps dominating the stats.

That's because there are four players named Long on the team, and yes, they are all related. And yes, they are also related to head coach Dave Long.

Coach Long's son, Joe, is on the team. Then, there are three of Coach Long's nephews on the squad: Jesse, Matt and Martin.

The Longs are all accomplished basketball players, but the one Long who's really having an outstanding season is Jesse, who's averaging 18 points a game. The 6 foot tall junior is leading the Trojans in scoring.

But there are other star players on the team not named Long. Six foot 5 inch tall senior Henry Pwono is a monster inside and is averaging 16 points a game and six rebounds.

North Catholic is a team to watch in Double A as we get closer to the WPIAL playoffs. It could be an amazing year of basketball at North this season because as usual, the girls team is a Single A power.
