Pittsburgh Steeler Battles Epilepsy

Alan Faneca Is Epilepsy Advocate

PITTSBURGH —

He is best known as a Pittsburgh Steeler and six-time All Pro offensive guard. But Alan Faneca is also known as an advocate for epilepsy, a condition he was diagnosed with at the age of 14.

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month and Faneca is speaking out to dispel misconceptions about the condition. He had some advice Tuesday for the more than 3 million Americans living with epilepsy.

"Get out and do things. As long as you're able to you should. Epilepsy is not going to hold you down. It doesn't define you, it's only something that you live with,” he said.

Faneca is seizure-free thanks to a daily regimen of two different pills, three times a day.

New epilepsy medications on the market are more compatible with other medication and allow those with the condition to lead more productive lives.
