Steelers, Pens Take Home Some ESPY Awards

LOS ANGELES —

The Pittsburgh Steelers took home two ESPY awards as the show taped Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The show aired Sunday night on ESPN.

In Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger connected with wide receiver Santonio Holmes for a game-winning pass in the corner of the end zone. The pass, arguably Roethlisberger's most important of his career to date, was voted "best sports play" of this past year.

"It's one of those ones you almost wish it was your fifteenth year and you can retire on it," Roethlisberger said, when asked about the Super Bowl-winning pass. "As a quarterback -- to throw that pass and win that game -- that's something you've been dreaming about since you were a kid in the backyard as Joe Montana."

The play beat out three others, including Alex Ovechkin's amazing goal as the Washington Capitols battled it out against the New York Rangers in this year's playoffs.

But the Steelers didn't stop there in the awards show. They, along with the Super Bowl losing Arizona Cardinals, took home the award for "best game" in Super Bowl XLIII.

The Steelers were nominated for five awards. In all, there are 37 sports categories, and the winners are chosen by the fans.

But the Steelers weren't the only team from Pittsburgh able to capture an award. The captain of the 2009 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby, walked out with the "best NHL player" award.

However, it was U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps who stole the show, grabbing three Espy awards including "best male athlete."
