Steelers' Polamalu Bonds With Cancer Patient, 11

PITTSBURGH —

Everyone in Pittsburgh knows Steelers safety Troy Polamalu plays hard, but Channel 11 News got a look at his softer side.

Polamalu made a special bond recently with an 11-year-old girl who's battling cancer.

Heather Miller met the Steelers star when the team was visiting UPMC Children's Hospital. She was undergoing chemotherapy at the time, but was able to bond with Polamalu over football.

"I thought he would be more hyper, just more crazy, but his voice is just so soft, and he is really nice," said Miller.

"Our friendship just hit off right away," said Polamalu. "We both enjoy football. She is a tomboy to the fullest."

This week, Miller was told her cancer may have returned, and she has to undergo another surgery.

Polamalu invited her to a team practice and then to the home opener against the Titans Thursday night at Heinz Field.
