PITTSBURGH —
The Torch Run is a series of races across Pennsylvania to encourage people to become organ donors. The final race was held in Pittsburgh on Friday, and Frank Holby carried the torch to its final destination, Market Square.
He said the torch is a symbol of the 21-year-old daughter he lost, and the lives she saved through organ donation.
“Had we not done that, a 19-year-old out of New Wilmington, Pa., would not have received his kidney," said Holby. "A 44-year-old male out of western Pennsylvania would not have received his kidney.”
The Donate-Life Pennsylvania Torch Run is a state-wide effort to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.
The opening ceremony for the Transplant Games was Saturday night in Pittsburgh. Events are scheduled to run through Tuesday.
