Star Trek's USS Enterprise goes on display at Smithsonian

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The original USS Enterprise has been transported to Washington.

The starship of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock is on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

The USS Enterprise first took flight on televisions everywhere in 1966.

The voyages of the Starship Enterprise ran for 3 seasons on NBC before being canceled.

It took a lot of work by the Smithsonian's restoration experts to bring the original Star Trek Enterprise back for a re-run.

It's 11 feet long and about 200 pounds of plastic and wood.

The details of the ship are only on one side.  When the series needed to show the left side, editors just reversed the film. You can see the other side here:

The original color has also been restored, a light green-- which would appear white or grey under studio lights to the cameras of that era.

The USS Enterprise will formally open this Friday, when the National Air and Space Museum celebrates its 40th anniversary.
