1 dead, 1 injured in blaze that destroyed Springdale house

SPRINGDALE, Pa. — One person died and a man was injured early Sunday when flames destroyed a home in Springdale, investigators said.

The fire broke out about 2 a.m. on Main Street, sending intense flames and heavy smoke into the sky as the house became engulfed.

Springdale Borough Police Chief Mike Naviglia dragged the man from the home's porch, but was unable to get to a woman who was inside, Channel 11's news exchange partners at TribLIVE reported.

The man required treatment from emergency medical service workers, Allegheny County Fire Marshal Matt Brown said. Crews later found the second person dead.

The house, which was set up like a duplex, is a total loss. A husband and wife lived on one of the sides and a brother and sister on the other. The sister, who was partially blind, was killed in the fire.

“All I heard was yelling and screaming and we got up and then smoke started pouring into our house,” said Michael Pent, the husband who lived next door.

Pent and his wife lived in the duplex for 30 years.

"The longer the day goes on the worse it gets...  Cause that's a lot of crap we gotta go through now," said Pent.

The American Red Cross is assisting the Pents.

The condition of the man who was pulled from the fire has not been released.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
