100+ volunteers pack, serve meals at Light of Life Rescue Mission

PITTSBURGH — More than 100 volunteers decided to give back on this Thanksgiving.

They packed and served meals at the Light of Life Rescue Mission on Pittsburgh's North Side.

The mission provides food and shelter for those in need.

"This place is blessed; we have been coming here for years and this is an awesome place," said David Horrell.

Light of Life served 1,000 meals around the city on Thanksgiving to people like Margie Laura.

She said it's a day that Pittsburghers all come together to reflect on what they're thankful for.

"It's about coming together, whether you are rich or poor, crippled, anything," Laura said.

And helping service all the turkey, dressing and warm pumpkin pie were dozens of volunteers, including Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

"It's what Pittsburgh is, it's talking about helping others and being family oriented and Thanksgiving is a time we can reflect on that," he said.

Channel 11 even caught up with NBC's The Voice star Chris Jamison helping out. For him, he said giving back to the community he loves is what it's all about.

"I have the luxury of going home and have dinner in a warm home. People here don't have that luxury, so if I can bring that here and warm their spirits, that's a win for everyone involved," Jamison said.

In addition to the meals served at the mission, volunteers also delivered dinners to residents in 15 high-rise buildings.
