13 dogs rescued from Washington County farm

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. — More than a dozen dogs were rescued from a farm in Washington County.

The dogs were found living in chicken coops and in desperate need of care and medical attention, according to a release by Animal Friends.

The owner surrendered the animals on March 22.

“The woman has been concerned about them. She just wants to make sure they're OK, so it was in the best interest of everybody,” said Shannon Tremblay, director of communications at Animal Friends.

A total of seven dogs were taken to Animal Friends, three of which needed immediate medical attention.

One of the dogs, named Mallory, had an issue with her eye and underwent surgery Thursday.

“This girl has a cherry eye,” said Eleanor Miller, the senior wellness coordinator at Animal Friends. “That’s a gland that’s inflamed.”

The Washington Area Humane Society took the six remaining dogs. One of them was also in need of immediate medical attention.

A spokesperson for Animal Friends said the dogs are under socialized and have issues like parasites and skin problems. Many of their medical issues could have been avoided by regular visits to a veterinarian.

“They've actually done really well. There's only a couple that I haven't been able to handle it,” Miller said.

Many of the dogs at Animal Friends have already undergone surgery and require daily medication. Once their health problems have been solved, the dogs will begin to be socialized.

“So they can understand what it's like to be a pet, because we want to, of course, find homes for them once they're ready,” Tremblay said.
