"We have two adult males who apparently were laying across the tracks. It does not appear as if they were awake at the time," Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

Toler said that drugs may have been involved, but additional tests need to be taken.

"We probably won't know exactly what was going on, but both of them were laying across the tracks at the time. The train (operator) saw them and it was too late at that point," Toler said.

Both men are in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital.

The identity and ages of the men have not yet been released.
