According to police, both people got out of a black SUV and went into the store. No other customers were inside at the time, but a cashier and a cook were behind a counter at the opposite end of the store.

The driver went back to the SUV and the passenger went behind a counter where cigarettes are kept, police said. That area of the store was out of the sight of the two workers.

About 20 packs of cigarettes, valued at $140, were taken by the passenger, who returned to the SUV before going back into the store, police said. He went behind the counter again, but was spotted by the cashier.

Police said there was a struggle as the cashier’s arms wrapped around the passenger, who was able to free himself and ran to the SUV. The SUV then drove away.

The cashier suffered minor injuries.

Earlier in the day, the passenger stole two cartons of cigarettes, valued at $150, from the same store.
