5-year-old left alone, wandering in cold, locked out of school

SPRING HILL, Pa. — A 5-year-old was left alone and locked out of school in Spring Hill by inattentive day care workers, according to an angry mother.

The girl walked around the back, because she didn't know how to ring the bell to get inside," Nichole Nolan said.

Her daughter, Kennedy, is in kindergarten and Nolan trusted a day care center to get her daughter to school so she could go to work.

But Tuesday, she says that didn't happen.

"Did not walk her into school, did not make sure she got in there safe and drove off," Nolan said.

She said the day care is supposed to drop Kennedy off at Spring Hill Elementary for breakfast and then the district takes her down to Spring Garden for her class.

A district spokesperson told Channel 11 the day care dropped Kennedy off nearly 30 minutes late to school and by that time the principal and staff were inside.

Nolan claims her daughter was left wandering around the school because she didn't know how to ring the bell to get inside.

"She told me she got locked out of school," Nolan said. "A stranger found her, she was walking outside alone, scared, crying, she's not familiar with the area."

But she fears it could have been worse.

Channel 11 went to the Tot's Spot Daycare in Troy Hill.

A woman who said she was in charge said Nolan's account is inaccurate and she would call back to say what did. Channel 11 never got that phone call.

"It's every parent's worst nightmare to know their 5-year-old was up there by herself, no one around and anyone could've took her," Nolan said.

The school district says all its schools are locked down once the school day begins and everyone has to be buzzed inside.
