The man, William Hollis, was outside on Hillendale Road when he was struck shortly before 3 p.m., according to investigators.

Police said the car that hit Hollis was driven by a 63-year-old Peters Township woman who had her grandchildren with her. It is unclear what caused her to veer across the road, but officials said she was not under the influence and speed did not appear to be a factor.

"The one thing we have confirmed is alcohol was not a factor. At this point the matter is under investigation, but it is unlikely speed contributed to this either," Sgt. Ben Dripps said.

Hollis was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors told Channel 11 News that Hollis was a father and grandfather who had lived in the area for many years.

"He was a very nice man. Always had a joke or some way to make you smile. It's a shame. It's a real shame," said Mike Neugebauer.

There have been three serious crashes on that stretch of road since 2011, and neighbors said they are circulating a petition to have something done. According to Ross police, not one of those crashes, including the one on Tuesday, were because of speed.

While police work to determine the cause of the crash, neighbors maintain that speed is an issue.

"I've seen many vehicles speeding up this hill at all hours of the day. I can be in bed at 2 in the morning (and) they're flying up and down here," Neugebauer said.

Police said they conducted a study on the road in December and did not find a speeding problem, but said they are listening and will continue to watch the road. Dripps said officials will evaluate the 25 mph residential roadway that neighbors said is turning into a speedway.
