8 students transported after school bus crash in Westmoreland Co.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — Eight students were taken to UPMC East for treatment on Tuesday after the school bus they were on was rear-ended by a tanker truck.

Police now want to talk to the tanker truck driver who exchanged his info with the bus driver but left before police could chat with him.

The truck crashed into the back of a school bus on Route 66 in Washington Township, Westmoreland County, around 3:50 p.m. The bus was heading south and slowing down to drop off children.

The truck that hit the bus is owned by Nicely Trucking Inc. of Ligonier.

About 24 students from Kiski Area South Elementary School were on board the bus. Eight of them were taken to the Monroeville hospital for minor injuries.

“He said that he was ok and was just complaining about his ankle being sore,” said Margi Jo Patton of her son, a fifth-grader. “We're just very relieved and thank God that everyone's OK.”

The crash near Mamont Drive was cleaned up in about 30 minutes, but police are asking for the tanker truck driver to come forward and talk about what happened.
