Arrest made in hit-and-run that caused Washington County woman's death

ALLENPORT, Pa. — Police have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run that left a Washington County woman dead.

Suzanne Ritenour was hit by a car in February 2016 in the parking lot of the Allenport Gun Club, across from her house. She died nearly five months later.

Police say Ritenour’s grandson, 10, told them he was walking with his grandmother to buy candy when she was hit by an SUV, fell backward and hit her head on the road.

According to a criminal complaint, Mary Matz put Ritenour’s body in her passenger’s seat and took the boy to get his candy. She then moved Ritenour’s body to her front porch and told police she didn’t know what happened to Ritenour, she likely fell. Matz then disappeared.

Police arrested Mary Matz on Monday. They said Matz told people in the community she was the driver and was having trouble sleeping at night.

“We live in this town. We know what people are saying, what people heard. We knew who did it, so it all came to light now. We are very happy,” said Monica Giffen, a neighbor.

Matz faces charges of an accident involving death and failure to stop.

She’s not in jail. She faces a preliminary hearing next month.
