PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire will be adding an arson dog to its team.
The bureau is getting the new team member, formally known as an accelerant detection dog, with the assistance of State Farm and Main Specialty Dogs, the bureau said. The bureau was awarded a scholarship to participate in the spring class of the 2018 State Farm Arson Dog Program in New Hampshire.

“This arson dog will not merely be a mascot for the bureau,” Fire Chief Darryl Jones said in a news release. “It will improve our capacity to sniff out the facts about suspicious fires.”
Pittsburgh’s arson dog will be the fifth in Pennsylvania to be trained through the State Farm program. Dogs in Beaver Falls, Allentown, Upper Chichester Township and Altoona were trained through the same program.
