Boy, 10, dies of complications from the flu

A 10-year-old boy from Connecticut died suddenly over the weekend from complications of the flu.

Nico Mallozzi, of New Canaan, traveled to Buffalo, New York over the weekend to play in a hockey tournament.

He never did play hockey, instead, his mother took him to Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo, where he later died.

An autopsy revealed that Mallozzi had the flu, influenza type B.  The illness got worse and led to pneumonia, then to sepsis, according to the medical examiner's office.

Mallozzi was a fourth-grader at New Canaan School District.  As a precaution, custodians have been performing extra cleanings at all school buildings.

Mallozzi played for the Connecticut RoughRiders Hockey Club and the club posted a message on its website, offering prayers to his family.
