Businesses near creek prone to flooding concerned about damage

MILLVALE, Pa. — Residents and business owners in Millvale are preparing for rain this weekend.

Thoughts of another major flood bring up bad memories from the last time their life's work was nearly washed away.

"Sandbags are going to go up and stay up till Monday," said Ed Carr, owner of Yette's Ice Cream & Candy Shop. "Right now, this is our busiest time of the year, so we have to hope for the best as far as this rain that's coming."

His well-known shop was destroyed in 2004 when the area saw some of the worst flooding.

"We had water up to the shelf, we lost all the equipment. It took one year to get it back open," Carr said.

He thought about closing his shop.

"They stood at the door and cried because of what happened," he said. "People put money in our mailbox, they wouldn't give their name, they said, 'You gotta fix it.'"

Everyone pitched in to breathe life back into the place and prepare it for future floods.

"We took out the metal doors that were outside to go into the basement, we shored up the whole basement and we did concrete work to keep water out," Carr said.
