City of Pittsburgh claims it has ended homelessness among veterans

PITTSBURGH — The city of Pittsburgh says it has ended homelessness among local veterans.

The achievement brought a Terrible Towel wave from regional HUD Director Joe DeFelice.

Joining him at Tuesday's event were some of the 587 veterans who have found homes since the creation of the Pittsburgh Rapid Results Homeless Veterans Boot Camp.

"Two years ago I found myself homeless and scared," Army veteran Kelly Ferry said. "These programs collectively saved my life."

"I just wish there was more programs like this across to the U.S. because there are veterans that don't get the help they need," Navy veteran Jason Merced said.

The collaboration features a master list of homeless veterans.

If one agency isn't able to help, another steps in.

On average, the program gets homeless vets off the streets and into homes within 90 days.
