The fire was reported shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Boggs Avenue, where heavy smoke billowed from the three vacant buildings involved. The fire reached five alarms as more than 75 firefighters worked to put it out, officials said.
Half of the city’s fire crews were on the scene to battle the fire.
Fire officials believe the buildings are a total loss.
People who live in the area, including residents of a nearby high-rise, were urged to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke.
"We smelled smoke and we thought maybe somebody was burning garbage and then all of a sudden it broke out into flames," said Judy Johnson, a local resident.
