Explosions rattle homes during Butler house fire

BUTLER, Pa. — Firefighters are trying to determine what caused an explosion during a Butler house fire early Monday morning.

Butler Fire Captain Ted Codispot said an explosion occurred after the fire began and that the blaze was "fully involved" by the time firefighters came on scene around 1:30 a.m.

The home on South Street is for sale, so no one was inside.

"It was some type of explosion, we don't know what yet," he said. "We did have the gas company here. They've checked everything. We're going to go from there."

Neighbors on either side of the unoccupied burning house said firefighters evacuated them for their safety.

"Just big booms and all you saw was sparks hitting the ground and flames and the fire just got so much bigger after the explosions," said neighbor Maria Slick.

Codispot said the back of the home sustained the heaviest damage.

Neighboring homes sustained minor damage.

The fire marshal is now investigating.
