Police: Motorcyclist killed after fleeing attempted traffic stop

SHALER — Allegheny County police say a chase turned deadly Friday night in Shaler.

It ended right near the Shop 'N Save on Babcock Boulevard, and the crash shut down Babcock between Geyer and Evergreen roads.

Leah LeBrew was riding in the passenger seat of her mom's car when she witnessed the tail end of the deadly crash.

"It was initial shock,” she said. “Like, I just kind of gasped and then I put my hand in front of my mom and she stopped the car."

County police say around 6:30 p.m., a Shaler officer tried to pull over the motorcyclist on Babcock. The person fled and eventually lost control, slamming the motorcycle into a car and flying into another after a chase that lasted only seconds.

"He flipped off his motorcycle and skidded all the way down,” LeBrew said. “We felt the car toward the back end bump. I'm not quite sure if it was him or the motorcycle."

Lebrew and her mother were heading to her sister's senior night at Shaler High School. Her mom's car was not damaged, but she says she knew the outcome was grim.

"I could tell he wasn't gonna make it by the way from what I saw,” she said.

LeBrew says the motorcyclist was tossed at least 5 feet from his bike, dying on impact.

"There was a police officer, I wanna say, within the minute of him hitting the ground ... there was already someone on the scene,” she said.

Witnesses told her the motorcyclist was going at least 80 mph as he passed the intersection of Babcock and Evergreen.

"I feel horrible. Anybody who has to go through a loss,” she said. “It's just tragic."

No other injuries were reported. Police have not yet identified the motorcyclist.
