Demonstrators read grand jury report outside state senators' offices

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Demonstrators held vigils outside state senators' offices in Harrisburg on Monday.

They want them to pass new laws to enhance protections for sexual abuse survivors in the light of the grand jury report on sex abuse by clergy members.

Sexual assault survivors flooded the hallways reading every page of the grand jury report, hoping lawmakers will hear them and take action.

The report recommended among other things, that the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse be eliminated and survivors with expired claims be given a two-year window to file civil suits.

TRENDING NOW:

A bill with both recommendations passed the state House, but what’s being called the "window of justice" was taken out of the state Senate version because of concerns that there were different standards for public and private entities.

Lawmakers fighting for the window hope that, with the right wording, it will make its way into the final bill.

Negotiation about what will go into the bill is ongoing.

A vote is expected tomorrow.
