Dormont homeowner burglarized while she was sleeping

Neighbors in Dormont are on high alert after a homeowner says her house was burglarized while she was asleep.

Police say they haven’t caught the suspect, but that’s not stopping the homeowner and other neighbors from taking extra precautions to protect their homes.

The homeowner Lisa Brand told Channel 11 the suspect tried to force his way inside the home not once, but three times.

Brand said he got inside the third time with a crowbar. The whole time, she said she was asleep.

She is now getting a home security system installed.

"We had been vigilant but geez, to come in while you’re sleeping at night," Brand said.

Brand woke up out of her sleep Sunday night.

Her dog wasn’t around and she heard him barking. He was outside trying to get in.

"It was really strange and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  I let him in and it just didn’t sit well with me. I felt really bad. I felt like maybe I left him out," Brand said.

The next morning, Brand went into the living room to find her TV missing.

“We had noticed some screens had been pulled up,” Brand said.

She thinks the suspect eventually used a crowbar to force his way inside and thinks that's how her dog got outside.

“I saw the side door had been pried open cause I could see wood chips all around,” Brand said.

She called police and alerted neighbors on the Nextdoor app.

A councilman for Dormont told me most of the thieves aren’t even from this area and likely use the T to get here looking for fast cash for drugs.

He also told me crime in this area has decreased over the last three years.

Neighbors say they will be remain vigilant, regardless.
