Drivers vacate Downtown Pittsburgh for OpenStreetsPGH

PITTSBURGH — An estimated 25,000 bicyclists and pedestrians flooded the streets of Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Taking part in OpenStreetsPGH, people walked and rode bicycles freely on several streets in the Downtown, West End and North Side areas without the threat of cars driving around them.

Car traffic was prohibited from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday on a three-mile stretch of Sixth Street, Federal Street, Western Avenue and Main Street.

That route also included a traffic closure of the West End Bridge. Bike Pittsburgh, the organization that coordinates the event, issued an advisory.

During the event, people took part in fitness workshops, kids’ activities, shopping, brunch, community arts and special promotions presented by more than 100 local businesses and organizations.

There was also a Canine Carnival hosted by the Humane Animal Rescue, free admission at the Children’s Museum and a selfie station on the West End Bridge.

Streets began closing at 8 a.m., and the following streets were impacted:

  • Roberto Clemente Bridge
  • Market Street from Market Square to Liberty Ave.
  • 6th Street from Liberty to Ft. Duquesne Blvd.
  • Federal Street to S. Commons.
  • West Commons.
  • Western Ave from West Commons to the West End Bridge
  • The West End Bridge
  • Stuben St from Sanctus to W. Carson St.
  • Main Street in the West End Village

All of those roadways were scheduled to reopen at 1:30 p.m.
