Duquesne police cracking down on aggressive drivers

DUQUESNE, Pa. — Drivers should be going 30 miles per hour in a construction zone along Route 837 in Duquesne.

But police say aggressive drivers constantly speed through the area, causing concern for the safety of construction workers and people walking by.

“I’ve seen accidents on this corner. I’ve seen accidents down here,” said motorist Raymond Thompson.

Police are cracking down while working around the clock. They told Channel 11 they issue 20 citations a day.

“You got one lane and you got people swerving in and out. It’s just crazy,” said motorist Satee Walker.

On Thursday, two drivers topped even that estimation. Police say two men were going 70 miles per hour. An officer in an unmarked police car spotted the two drag racing on New Library Road at State Route 837.

“If there’s no police presence out here, I’d say the average driver is going 40, 50 miles an hour,” Walker said.

The drag racers were stopped at a 7-11, just a few blocks away from Kennywood, where Nicole Neal’s son works. She won’t let her son ride a bus home, because she says it’s too dangerous.

“He’s 14. He just got his first summer job at Kennywood,” she said. “He wants to ride his bike here all the time and I will not let him come anywhere near 837. It’s horrible there’s so much traffic, people speeding and everything.”
