Family critically hurt in Liberty Bridge crash testifies in court

PITTSBURGH — A Brookline family testified in court Tuesday after a head-on crash in April that left four adults and a baby injured.

Channel 11 was in the courtroom this morning when we heard witness testimony from the Ciampaglia family, and what they remember from the day the crash happened.

An officer investigating the crash says Richard Hauschel caused the crash.

He's accused of driving the wrong way on the bridge, speeding and texting four minutes before the first 911 call for the crash came in.

On Tuesday, Brandon Ciampaglia, who was driving the car Hauschel is accused of hitting, said he "was welcoming my first child into the world" and had just left Magee-Womens Hospital that day, and testified that "I actually remember nothing of the accident," only that he recalled waking up at UPMC Mercy Hospital afterward.

His wife, Maureen, who was also in the car along with their 4-day-old son, Liam, testified that "I did not see the vehicle approaching, Again, I was paying attention to my son -- I just felt the impact."

She said good Samaritans quickly came to help them.

All three of the Ciampaglias suffered critical injuries, and Maureen said their son still has to take anti-seizure meds because of his injuries.

Hauschel also suffered critical injuries, and the driver of a third car involved in the crash refused medical treatment at the scene.

All of the charges against Hauschel were held for court, where he'll be again in November.
