Former in-home nurse sentenced for stealing more than $6,000 from elderly siblings

PITTSBURGH — Seeing the woman who defrauded them out of thousands of dollars plead guilty in court was supposed to be a good day for Debbie and Allen Mishkin.

But moments after the sentencing, they told only Channel 11 that's not how they feel at all.

“I'm not happy, but what am I going to do?” said Debbie Mishkin. “I think she deserved jail time for what she's done to us.”

On Tuesday, Alida Ciprian pleaded guilty to stealing more than $6,000 from the elderly siblings while working as an in-home nurse at their house in Squirrel Hill.

Since she has no criminal record, Ciprian was sentenced to five years' probation with no jail time.
She will have to pay back the $3,800 she still owes the Mishkins, which is little relief for Debbie.

“Hm, I'll never see it. I've resigned myself to that,” she said.

During the hearing, Ciprian apologized for stealing the money, telling the judge, “I know what I did was wrong and I feel horrible about it... I want to pay the money back.”

While there is frustration on the part of the victims, Allen Mishkin is relieved to see this part of the case wrap up.

“I'm happy that justice came through," he said.

Investigators say they're looking for another former in-home nurse named Jayla Williams-Holmes who they say also stole money from the Mishkins.
