Greensburg diocese takes steps to prevent future child sex abuse

GREENSBURG, PA. — The Diocese of Greensburg taking more steps to keep children safe from sex abuse.

This announcement about the decision to form an advisory council to protect against abuse comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed just this week against the diocese.

The council will represent Armstrong, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland County, each of which is covered by the Greensburg Diocese. Members will include an abuse survivor, a Catholic person, a non-Catholic person members of law enforcement, the legal and health community, as well as a former tv reporter will round out the group.

The council will oversee several listening sessions that will give parishioners the opportunity to talk about the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report. Council members will then analyze recommendations from the listening sessions, develop and implement an action plan, issue yearly reviews and ensure the diocese’s processes and procedures meet best practices.

Listening session dates / locations:

  • Oct. 22 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Parish, Greensburg
  • Oct. 24 at St. Therese, Little Flower of Jesus Parish, Uniontown
  • Oct. 29 at St. Margaret Mary Parish, Lower Burrell
  • Oct. 31 at Holy Family Parish, West Newton
  • Nov. 5 at St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Kittanning
  • Nov. 8 at Mother of Sorrows Parish, Murrysville
  • Nov. 29 at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish, Indiana.

The Oct. 31 session will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The others will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
