Groundbreaking for major new project in Station Square

PITTSBURGH — The future of Station Square is changing after officials broke ground on a major new project.

"Our riverfronts are being rediscovered. They're being called home for the first time for a lot of different neighborhoods and we're finally seeing it now occurring in the South Side," Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said.

The 5-story Glasshouse will go up along the Monongahela River in Station Square where the city's old glassmaking factories once stood.

It's another nod to Pittsburgh's past, as the city moves to the future.

"In 1880, Pittsburgh made about 30 percent of the glass in America; by 1920 it made 80 percent," said James Murray-Coleman, senior vice president of Trammell Crow Company.

Glasshouse will boast plenty of amenities for residents of its 319 apartments.

A fitness center, yoga room, pool and direct access to the Great Allegheny Passage trail system.

A restaurant and sculpture park will also be open to the public.

"I'm a 21 year resident of Mount Washington," said Erin Molchany, director of Governor Wolf's Southwest Regional Office. "I'm looking forward to all the amenities that are going to be added just
down the hill from me."

If all goes as planned, Glasshouse will open in the Summer of 2019. A second phase of the project could include more housing, office space and a hotel.
