Hazmat team called to Manchester area to deal with substance leak

A Hazmat situation is developing in a Pittsburgh neighborhood near the North Side.

A Hazmat Team was called to Chateau Street in Pittsburgh’s Manchester neighborhood due to a brown, ooze-like liquid leaking into the streets.

A fire fighter told Channel 11 that the liquid is “a substance used by Duquesne light to cool underground power lines.”

This oil coolant that goes into the power lines is "non-hazardous," according to a spokesman from Duquesne Light.

Officials could not confirm whether or not the liquid has gotten into the storm drain located on Chateau Street, which could then seep into the nearby Ohio River.

Duquesne Light and fire fighters are on scene trying to stop the leak from what appears to be a crack in the street.

According to Duquesne Light, the "ongoing construction" on Chateau Street could have caused the pipe around the company's underground cable to leak.

Duquesne Light learned of the issue around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the spokesperson said, and have been working to stop and repair the leak -- as well as "minimize any environmental impact."
