Hershey Park closes ride until Ohio State Fair investigation is complete

HERSHEY, Pa. — Hershey Park has closed a ride similar to the one that killed a man at the Ohio State Fair.

The Claw at Hershey has never been involved in any incidents, but the park says it wants more information about Wednesday's tragic accident before opening it back up.

The Fayette County Fair opened on Thursday night and most people didn't seem too concerned about safety.

The fair doesn't have the Fire Ball ride that broke in Ohio, but there is one that’s pretty similar.

“I didn't see a problem in it, I rode a couple other rides, too,” David Friend said.

11 Investigates looked up Pennsylvania state law for fairs and carnivals.

It says that each ride must be inspected before it opens at any new location by a licensed inspector, and that inspection must be submitted to the state.

In Ohio, investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the malfunction.

Tyler Jarrell, 18, was killed. He had just signed up for the Marines.

Seven other people were injured, some critically.

All rides at the state fair are now shut down and being re-inspected.

“What you can do is you can inspect, And you can re-inspect and you can in this case have a third party inspect,” Ohio Governor John Kasich said. "But if you're looking for guarantees in life, they don't exist.”

Investigators say the Fire Ball passed inspection the same day it malfunctioned.
