Highmark is now partnering with axialHealthcare to help medical providers make informed decisions on pain management and opioid therapy.  This program was implemented in West Virginia and saw positive results.

Beginning in early March, Highmark will also implement a new policy for prescribing opioid-based medications.  The policy will limit members to a seven-day supply of medication.  It will also address new prescriptions for extended-release opioids.

The policy puts new restrictions on prescribing extended- released opioids for new patients.

The new policy is designed to reduce the risk of dependence for people who have never used opioids before.
