Intruder shot, killed after confrontation with homeowner in Allegheny Co. neighborhood

ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. — Police are investigating after a home invasion ended in a deadly shooting in an Allegheny County neighborhood.

The incident happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday on West Bellecrest Avenue in Brentwood, according to Allegheny County detectives.

A 71-year-old man and 62-year-old woman who live there called 911 for a reported deadly home invasion, investigators said.

When officers got there, they found a 38-year-old man, Mitch Verheyen, dead on the sidewalk outside the apartment.

Verheyen confronted the homeowner outside, investigators determined from their investigation.

The homeowner went back into the apartment, and police said Verheyen followed him into the property. That’s when police said the homeowner grabbed a gun and shot at him at least three times. Verheyen finally tried running from the home before he collapsed outside and passed away.

“I was in the house but my husband and friend they heard four gunshots. Maybe three from what I understand. All of the sudden, within minutes cops were here,” neighbor Cassie Smith said.

Allegheny County Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
