Local school district to push back school start times

Washington High School students hoping for an extra half hour of sleep got their wish.

On Monday, the school board agreed to push back the start time next school year. The days will start at 8:20 a.m. instead of 7:50 a.m.

School start times in the district's junior high, intermediate and primary schools will also be pushed back accordingly.

In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics urged middle and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. to ensure students get enough sleep and maintain healthy sleeping habits.

Since then, several school districts across the country have made changes and a lot of others in our area have done studies and held votes, but Washington will take the next step.

The start time changes will begin in fall.
