Local woman goes missing while vacationing in Mexico

PITTSBURGH — A Mount Washington woman has been missing for more than a week after she disappeared while vacationing in Mexico.

"I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul," Patrick Smith said.

Smith wears the quote, which is the favorite of his girlfriend Caley Manning, on his collar. It's all he has since she disappeared last week in Isla Mujeres.

"I just miss her smiling face and she really did light up the room when she came in," Smith said.

Manning and her friend went to Mexico for a weeklong vacation at a resort. Then one morning, no one knew where she was.

Smith got a passport and flew to Mexico to find her.

"I was ready to move mountains to find her. If there was anything I could do to find her or anything that would leave me to believe she was down there, I was going to, aiming to do that," Smith said.

According to online reports from Riviera-Maya-News.com, multiple agencies have searched for Manning after several witnesses say they saw a woman go into the water at a seawall near a hotel.

"She had a couple drinks, beer and a shot, went over to (the) wall, hopped on down and went for a swim. Everyone was calling her back and she said, 'I can swim. I can swim!'," Smith said.

That's when the witnesses lost sight of her.

Smith said several agencies looked for her that night but never found her.

"I don’t think there’s any foul play. It sounds like something she would do. She was bold, fierce and she was fearless," Smith said.

Smith has been communicating with Department of State, which said it is waiting on Mexican officials to finish their investigation into Manning's disappearance.
