Long-time local police chief off the job as district attorney investigates

ELIZABETH BOROUGH, Pa. — A local police chief with a long-term presence in his community is off the job.

The police chief of Elizabeth Borough is on leave and a lot of residents are asking what their police chief did to be put on leave.

Because it’s a personnel matter, borough officials would not give Channel 11 any details.

As of today, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office has been asked to investigate Tim Butler.

When Channel 11 reached out to the Elizabeth Borough Police department, Patrol Sergeant Garrett Kimmell did confirm he is now handling day-to-day operations of the 12-officer force while the chief is on leave.

He went on to say, “We cannot comment on any ongoing investigations, or personnel matters.”

The borough’s mayor echoed that response when Channel 11 asked him for comment.

A spokesperson for the Allegheny County District Attorney's office told Channel 11 they received a request Moinday morning from officials in Elizabeth Borough to review information about Chief Butler.

The borough’s next council meeting will be next Tuesday, but officials do have the ability to call an emergency executive session at any moment.
