Major road project in Etna complete, road reopens after months of repairs

ETNA, Pa. — After months of major repairs, Parker Street in Etna reopened to traffic Friday.

Repairing Parker Street was a long and expensive project, not just replacing the damaged water main, but how much it cost to have police standing by as crews worked tirelessly to finish it.

The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority spent more than four months replacing 300 feet of the water main on Parker Street in Etna after a leak nearly drained one of the city's largest reservoirs.

The project cost $2.5 million, which includes hundreds of thousands of dollars that 11 Investigates has learned are tied to police protection.

Etna officers were stationed at the construction site for much of the project, redirecting oversized trucks and helping residents. That alone cost the PWSA nearly $300,000.

PWSA interim director Bob Weimar told 11 Investigates the problem proved to be larger than expected, but it's money well spent.
