Man arrested after possibly biggest crystal meth bust in Westmoreland County

Police in Westmoreland County arrested a man after they what they said could be the biggest crystal methamphetamine bust ever in the county.

“This by far is one of the largest seizures of crystal meth in my 18-year career. Just seeing that quantity is astronomical,” said Trooper Steve Limani of the Pennsylvania State Police.

Troopers and county detectives arrested George Wurthman, 57, on Monday after serving a warrant at a home on Bethel Church Road in Unity Township.

Police said Wurthman was traveling to California where he would purchase large quantities of crystal meth.

“Kind of the way to describe the scenario is like that Breaking Bad show, trying to give you an idea of the quantity being made,” Limani said.

Troopers with a new community-enforcement team, along with Westmoreland County detectives, searched Wurthman’s home. They said they found $30,000 worth of crystal meth, long guns, a handgun that had been reported stolen, packaging supplies and $1,400 in cash.

“This was significantly more pure - and a more complicated system of making - crystal meth. We are very fortunate to get this off the street,” Limani said.

Wurthman is charged with possession with intent to deliver, conspiracy, receiving stolen property and drug possession.

He remained in the Westmoreland County Prison on Tuesday on a $150,000 bond.
