Man robbed as he stopped to help driver on Route 28, police say

A man who stopped to help a driver on the side of the road who appeared to be having car trouble was robbed, state police said.

According to troopers, the 49-year-old Lower Burrell man stopped Friday evening when he saw someone pulled over on the Springdale on-ramp to Route 28 north.

The man assumed the other driver was having car trouble.

Instead, police said, the man was assaulted by another person at the scene, and items were taken from the man and his car. He was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The incident has some people questioning their safety.

"We have three daughters and we always tell them never pull over for somebody,” said Barbie Moio of Cawansville. “That's sad in this day and age that you have to say that."

Darrell Kaufman said he’s stopped countless times to help drivers in need, but after this, he’ll think twice before doing that again.

"A lot of times in the past, because you see them broke down on the road and you feel sorry for them. You want to do what you can to help them," he said. “This now makes you a little more leery and makes you think about your surroundings.”

Investigators did not release details on the suspect. No arrests have been made.
