"It's horrible," Quang Bright, a longtime friend of Street's and owner of Pho Van, said. "I can't believe that I'm standing here and talking about this with you today."
Street helped out at the restaurant and was there until about 9:30 p.m. Thursday when he began walking to a nearby bus stop to go home.
"He was here with me last night," Bright said. "I left and then he left after."
Police say whoever hit Street kept driving. Medics gave him CPR and tried to revive him, but his family says he had severe head trauma and died on the street.
Liberty Avenue was closed between 21st and 23rd streets while police investigated.
Police have not provided any details about the vehicle involved.
