Massive chunk of ice causing flooding fears along Allegheny River

A massive ice chunk on the Allegheny River is causing concerns for people in several townships who live along the banks.

The mass runs all the way from Tarentum to Cheswick and could cause serious flooding when warmer weather comes this weekend.

Channel 11 has learned that the Army Corps of Engineers is carefully monitoring this enormous sheet of ice, which stretches for two to three miles.

People who live along the river said their homes flooded last weekend and they are worried that more is to come.

"It's unusual. I've never seen anything like it," Tarentum borough manager Michael Nestico said.

“We've been trying to stay on top of it and monitoring the situation and keeping in good contact with the Army Corps, the county and other emergency officials. We do have some concerns, but right now we're trying to get as many updates as we can."

Residents like Bill Stuckley are also concerned. His East Deer home near a tributary creek that overflowed last weekend is already taking in water.

"It pretty much 360'd our house like we were floating on a pond. Unbelievable," he said. "It came like from the back yard down that way and from this side it was pouring in the walls, the doors. It was unbelievable.

"Everyone's moving their car in last desperation mode to get it out of the flood."

The Allegheny County Department of Emergency Services is prepared to activate an emergency operations center, officials said. But Stuckley is still on edge.

"We're scared, you know, if we get hit, I mean," he said. "It's gonna be another disaster."
