NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Metal detectors will be installed at two elementary schools in the New Kensington-Arnold School District after two recent incidents.
School directors announced Thursday night the installation of the metal detectors at Martin Elementary School and H.D. Berkey Elementary School.
The most recent incident leading up to the decision happened Tuesday, when a student brought a small knife to Martin Elementary.
In December, parents claimed a loaded handgun was found in a student’s backpack. However, the district wouldn’t confirm that, only saying there was an “unexpected event.”

Superintendent John Pallone told Channel 11 News that the metal detectors aren’t necessarily a direct response to the recent incident, rather it was just time to update security measures.
“We want them to be safe, no matter where they're at. And we get a little cooperation from the parents, a little more effort on our side, and I think everything kind of gels together. From hereafter and forth, kids will be safe, families will be safe and nobody will be alarmed,” Pallone said.
