9 teens injured in single-car crash in Lower Burrell

A rollover crash in Westmoreland County on Saturday afternoon sent nine teenagers to the hospital, some with critical injuries.

A Ford Explorer driven by one of the teenagers was heading east on Dutchmans Run Road in Lower Burrell when it veered off the road around 1:45 p.m., struck an embankment and rolled over.

Channel 11 learned from police that all nine people who were in the SUV are between the ages of 14 and 17. Three of them were girls.

Four medical helicopters were called to the scene and flew victims to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Ambulances took one victim to Children's and two each to Forbes Regional and Allegheny Valley hospitals.

"At least five juveniles were ejected from the vehicle or partially ejected,” said Lower Burrell Patrolman Steve Aulerich. “Their injuries range from moderate to critical.

"The State Police Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to assist in the investigation. At this time the crash investigation is ongoing."

Police confirm to channel 11 that most, if not all, of the teens injured in the crash are students in the Burrell School District.

"On behalf of Burrell School District, our prayers go out to the families and students involved,” said Superintendent Shannon L. Wagner.

None of the teens have been identified and police haven't determined what caused the accident.
